FRANKLIN YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (FYHA) PROGRESSION

Stage 1: Learn to Skate

FYHA’s Learn to Skate is designed for beginner skaters, including boys and girls with limited to no skating experience. Using USA Hockey curriculums as a guide, our volunteer coaches develop and execute instructional drills designed to teach basics including proper stance, strides, knee bend, use of edges and stopping. The ice is eventually split into sections, allowing participants to be grouped based on age, ability and progression. At coaches’ discretion, skaters who are ready for the Little Flyers can transition at any point. Please click here for more information.

Stage 2: Little Flyers (Formerly Intro to Hockey)

Little Flyers is an entry level instructional program for children, ages 4-9. Run by USA Hockey certified volunteer coaches, weekly practices are designed to teach basic hockey skills including skating (proper stance, strides, use of edges and stopping), stick-handling and shooting in a structured, station-based setting. Over the course of more than five months, Little Flyers participate in consistently executed on-ice drills and age appropriate games to prepare and excite them for participation in FYHA’s U8 or U10 program the following season.  Please click here for more information.

Stage 3: In-House Program

FYHA In-House is a safe, fun and challenging on-ice program that emphasizes skating fundamentals and skill development for players ages 8 and under. A primary focus of our program is player development. Practices are station-based to help ensure a skater to coach ratio that allows for dedicated direction and attention. Throughout the course of the season, each player will also not only develop a better understanding of the game but the importance of teamwork. Please click here for more information.

Stage 4: Town Travel

Eligibility starts at 8 & under and continuing through high school, boys and girls play on travel teams. Placement follows annual tryouts and is based on individual skill and development level. Our teams currently compete in the South Shore Conference and Metro South Hockey League
